CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychologists are trained to assess, diagnose and treat people who deals with a wide range of psychological distress. This includes various emotional and life challenges, mental health problems, as well as psychiatric disorders. Treatment is in the form of psychotherapy sessions, where we address your emotional challenges by talking, rather than using medication. Where indicated, should medication be necessary, Marina works closely with a team of Psychiatrists, to whom she will then refer, whilst continuing with psychotherapy sessions.

Individual Adult Psychotherapy

The journey of learning about oneself, of processing difficulties and trauma can, at times, be uncomfortable and painful. However, with this comes growth and insight that can provide you with a sense of empowerment, fulfilment, and renewed energy. In fact, such a journey can offer immense rewards, such as to unlock your potential and evolve into your true self. Being very aware of the fact that bringing one’s innermost fears, difficulties and traumatic experiences to the therapy room is not always easy, building a trusting relationship with her client and creating a safe space to work in, is of utmost importance to Marina. As a therapist, this quote by Terence really resonates with her: “I am human; let nothing human be alien to me.

Whether you are in crisis, struggling to cope with a traumatic experience, or whether you simply want to learn more about yourself, as a trained Clinical Psychologist Marina is able to facilitate this process for you. Please contact her to schedule an appointment and begin your journey along the path of growth, where we will work hand-in-hand with you to explore difficulties and work towards improving your quality of life, within a professional, confidential and safe space.

What to expect at your Psychotherapy Sessions
First session
What brought you here?

Your first visit with Marina is all about getting to know you and what brought you to your appointment. She may ask you to describe some of the symptoms you are experiencing and the concerns you may have. These may include asking about your thoughts and feelings with regards to the problem as well as the extent of the impact it is having on your life. Marina will ask you to describe the history of your symptoms (when the problem first began and how long it has been happening). She will also ask whether the problem has changed since it first began and the frequency, duration and intensity of the problem.

What has shaped you?

Marina will also be interested to learn more about your family, the nature of relationships with family members and whether there is any family history of substance abuse or mental health issues. She may also ask about your developmental history (i.e. your childhood and teenage years), your relationship history, and previous history of psychological help. Current information about your lifestyle – including work, study, leisure activities, friendships and relationships, can also be useful in getting to know you and understanding what you are experiencing. Marina will also be interested in your goals and expectations for therapy and what specific changes you would like to see.

Observations and therapy recommendations

Equipped with all of the above information, Marina will provide you with feedback and her views on the presenting issue(s), possible causes and maintaining factors. Based on this assessment, she will develop a treatment plan suited to your unique situation.

Additional sessions

Future therapy sessions involve working collaboratively on your goals and chipping away at the presenting problem(s) to improve your coping mechanisms and mood. Marina will make a recommendation about the frequency of your therapy sessions based on your individual circumstances. Often people attend sessions on a weekly or fortnightly basis, depending on their presenting problem.

How long do sessions take?

In general, sessions last for 45 – 50 minutes, once a week. The length of therapy differs; some forms of therapy last only a few sessions, while others are long-term, lasting for months or years. Guaranteed Client Confidentiality Marina Genis is bound by strict confidentiality rules. This means she will not share any information discussed during therapy sessions with anyone else. The only time that we would break this rule is if we were worried about your safety or someone else’s safety or when Marina has been court ordered to make certain disclosures. More detail are contained in Marina Genis’ Informed Consent Agreement.
